QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS:

What money is available?

Currently the Louisiana program is one program.  The Federal Energy Act of 2005 is still active as well, and could be extended this year past 2010.

NOTE: YOU CAN NOT PARTICIPATE IN HERO IF YOU GOT AN EMPOWER LOUISIANA APPLIANCE REBATE IN 2010

Why get a rating?

Most rating requests are done with the hope of receiving a State of Louisiana rebate. This is through the HERO (Home energy rebate option) program through the Department of Natural Resources. While a rebate is always possible, it is NOT  guaranteed. Your completed improvements must meet certain State criteria to qualify for the rebate.

What is the benefit if I don't qualify for a rebate?

Of course, if you want lower utility bills, you definitely can benefit from a rating and making energy use improvements. The experts state that most homes start saving money immediately, even with the financed improvement costs subtracted first.

A rating may help ensure safer living conditions, and help you prevent early aging or damage of your home. Health and comfort benefits are almost always an included bonus.

Who can rate your house?

If you want to qualify for a rebate then you must have a State of Louisiana Certified Home Energy Rater do the rating. (In addition to that, KR Services has 30 years of experience in the air-conditioning industry, and is current president of the National Energy Rater's Association)

Why call KR?

I know if you're like me, you get tired of people that are hard to reach,  that don't return phone calls, especially post-Katrina. I won't be the cheapest or fastest, but I'm probably unique in my love of good customer service. I know THAT'S what I myself look for when buying.
I AM ALSO THE ONLY RATER EMPLOYING INFRARED IMAGING FOR ALL MY RATINGS.

When is the initial visit made?

The existing home site will require a visit by the rater BEFORE improvements are made. A lot of information will be gathered and a blower door test will be made. (Keep in mind that this test is quite noisy and will make the house feel like the weather outdoors.) The home will be tested for infiltration (air leaks and drafts) and duct system leaks*. This is where INFRARED IMAGING comes into play! (In the case of a new home, instead of a site visit the rater must perform a plan review BEFORE the foundation is poured!)

What reports will I receive?

You will receive a copy of your preliminary rating, the recommended improvements to achieve a rebate, and the utility savings that they should produce. A rough estimate will be given as to the money you will likely spend on the improvements. You will also receive a duct leakage report, showing which central air ducts in your home are leaking the worse. (This is an nice included value from KR, and is only a tiny fraction of the total cost.)

When should I get the work done?

The work you decide to do must be completed before the rater is called in for the final visit. Remember to save any receipts or proof of payment you make for the work, as this is needed for verification is case of a State audit.

Why is a second visit needed?

Your home site will require a second and final visit by the rater to qualify for any State rebate. Work will be VERIFIED by the rater before it can be reported to the State. A second blower door test is required on this visit. If you still have more improvements to make and wish to delay the rebate process, the rater would have to make a third visit which WILL cost you extra. (IF THE HOME IS NEW THE BLOWER DOOR TEST IS REQUIRED OR THE RATING IS INVALID!)
